We look forward to working with you and your children this year.
What is ENL?
Freestanding English as a new language (ENL) programs provide instruction in English with home language support, emphasizing English language acquisition. Students in freestanding ENL programs can come from many different language backgrounds, and English may be the only common language among the students.
Prior to the 2015-16 School Year, ELLs were initially designated as beginner, intermediate, or advanced based on NYS exams.
There are 5 proficiency levels for ELLs based on the NYSITELL and NYSESLAT; entering, emerging, transitioning, expanding, and the fifth level, proficient/commanding, continues to indicate the student is not an ELL.
In our school we have two ENL programs:
•Push-in model: an ENL teacher works with ELLs in collaboration with general education classroom teachers to provide language acquisition and vocabulary support. 4 periods a week (entering and emerging, transitioning, expanding and commanding)
•Pull-out model: ELLs who spend the majority of their day in all-English content instruction are brought together from various classes for English-acquisition-focused instruction. 4 periods a week (entering, emerging students).
Mrs. Morozova pushes in to grades K, 1, 2 and 3 and pulls out these grades.
Mrs. Kubiak pushes in to grades 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 and pulls out these grades.
