This week in math we will be ending our fractions unit and starting our new unit on Geometry! (Chapters 10 and 11). We will be focusing on lines, rays, angles, and twodimensional shapes.
In math class, the focus this week will be classifying triangles and quadrilaterals and lines of symmetry.

This week students will be finishing up their Unit 7 Assessment and we will begin Unit 8 on multiplying fractions. This unit will cover the following topics:
 Multiplying fractions by a whole number
 Multiply a mixed number by a whole number
Students should still be practicing:

This week we will be finishing up Unit 7 (Adding and Subtracting Fractions). Our study guide will be due on Thursday 3/7/19. Our assessment will take place on Monday 3/11/19.

Welcome back! Hope you had an enjoyable midwinter break!
This week we will continue working on adding and subtracting fractions. We will also learn a new skill and that is converting mixed numbers and improper fractions.
A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed"number. Example: 1½ (one and a half) is a mixed number.
An improper fraction A fraction where the numerator (the top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (the bottom number). So it is usually "topheavy". Example: 5/3 (five thirds) and 9/8 (nine eighths) are improper fractions.

Students have finished up their Unit 6 Assessment on Equivalent Fractions. This week we will start our unit 7 on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions. We will start with unit fractions. A unit fraction tells the part of the whole that 1 piece represents. A unit fraction always has a numerator of 1. We will also learn how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. Then we will review those two topics before students head off for winter break.

Week of February 4, 2019
This week we will finish up exploring the fascinating world of fractions! Last week we learned some more interesting "truths" about fractions:
Equivalent fractions refer to two or more fractions that equal the same amount.
We can multiply a fraction by a number to find an equivalent fraction of more parts ( 1/2 x 2 = 2/4).
We can divide a fraction by a number to find an equivalent fraction of lesser parts. This is called putting a fraction in simplest form or simplifying a fraction ( 2/4 ÷ 2 = 1/2).
This week we will focus on Comparing and Ordering Fractions. Students will be taking a math assessment on chapter/unit 6 (Equivalent Fractions) on Monday 2/11/19. Study guides were given out last week and are due this friday.

This week we are continuing to explore the fascinating world of fractions! Last week we learned some interesting "truths" about fractions:
Fractions are made up of equal parts.
Fractions don't depend on the shape but rather the size of the part. So different shapes can be equal in size.
Fractions are represented with a numerator (how many parts you have) and a denominator (how many parts the whole is divided into).
Equivalent fractions refer to two or more fractions that equal the same amount.
This week we will be exploring:
Generating Equivalent Fractions, Simplest Form, Common Denominators, and Solving Word Problems using Equivalent Fractions.

Week of January 22, 2019
This week we are starting a new unit, Unit 6: Equivalent Fractions. This unit will present new, challenging, and exciting concepts to students! We are going to start our unit off with some exploratory activities that will allow students to investigate and explore these concepts, discussing, critiquing, and debating the ideas of their classmates.
Fraction Food for thought…and what we can do to make sure we don’t contribute to students’ misconceptions!
 Students learn “whole” numbers easily because they can count and “see” them. We need to help students realize that they can “count” fractions as well.
 Fractions ARE numbers. We need fractions to help us represent the amounts between whole numbers.
 Students often have the misconception that the larger the denominator, the larger the pieces are rather than the greater the number of pieces
 The size of the “whole” is critical when discussing fractions and that ½ of one object does not necessarily equal ½ of another.
 Students often think equal parts must look the same rather than just be equal amounts of another.
 Sometimes students count “pieces” and fail to pay attention to the “whole”. For example, looking at two pizzas cut into thirds, each with one piece shaded might be seen as 2/6 rather than 2/3.

Week of January 14, 2019This week we will be wrapping up Unit 5 on Factors, Multiples, and Patterns. Unit 5 assessment will be held on Wednesday (1/16). Study guides are due on Tuesday (1/15) where we will review for the assessment.Unit 5 covers:

This past week in math we have been continuing on in our unit of Factors, Multiples, and Patterns. We have been learning how to find factors of a number as well as determining whether a number is prime or composite. This upcoming week we will finding common factors between numbers, finding multiples of a number and learning about number patterns.A few reminders: Extra Credit packet was collected on Friday (1/4). Week of December 10, 2018This week we will be wrapping up Unit 4 on Division. We wil be focusing on division word problems and mixed operation word problems (subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division). Unit 4 assessment will be held on Friday (12/14). Study guides were given out on Friday (12/7) and will be due on Wednesday (12/12) where we will review for the assessment.Below are a few links students can use to help them with the skills taught in class this week:Week of December 3, 2018This week we will be continuing with Unit 4 on Division. Last week students were taught how to use the partial quotients (long 7) strategy to solve division problems. This week students will learn how to use the standard algorithm also known as long division. It's important that students know how to use both stratagies. This week we will be taking our Unit 2 and 3 assessment on Thursday, Nov. 15th. Study guides were distributed last week and are due on Wednesday, November 14th. The study guide will count as a homework grade. Failure to submit the study guide on the due date will result in a zero. We will not accept any late assignments. This week we will finish up Unit 3 by learning how to use an area model (expanded form) and the standard algorithm (regrouping) to multiply by 2  digit numbers. Our Unit 3 assessment will take place the following week on Thursday, November 15th. Study guides will be distributed this week.
Students should stlll be practicing their basic multiplication facts. There will be another basic fact quiz coming up this week! Use the tab to the left under "practice your multiplication facts" to practice each night!

This week we will start Unit 3: Multiply by 2digit numbers! Students took their Unit 2 quiz and will receive it back this week. It should be returned back, signed. We will be working with the same strategies we used in Unit 2, now with doubledigit numbers. This week we will be working on multiplying by tens, estimating products, and using area models.

Week of October 22, 2018
This week we will be wrapping up unit 2 by learning how to multiply multidigit numbers by 1digit numbers using regrouping also known as the standard algorithm. We will review unit 2 on Thursday and take our quiz on Friday. Review sheets for the quiz were handed out last Friday. You can also find the review sheet on this website under the tab "study guide". There will be a basic fact multiplication timed quiz that will be coming up this week. It will be graded and counted toward students' overall average. Please ensure that students are practicing their basic facts every night!

Unit 1 is a wrap! We finished our first assessment on Friday. Students will be given back their assessment on Tuesday and should be reviewed, signed, and given back by Friday. We will be starting Unit 2: Multidigit Multiplication this week. We will start with multiplication comparison equations, multiplying tens and hundreds, and estimating products.
In this unit its's very important that students brush up on and practice their multiplication facts and times tables. Students are expected to know their times tables as they were tested on these in third grade. Students will have multiplication quizzes in this unit. These quizzes will be simple and quick where questions will look like this:

Week of October 1, 2018
This week we will be wrapping up our first unit (place value)! We will finish up adding and subtraciting large numbers in word problems and then we will review on Wednesday. Our first assessment will be this Thursday, October 4th. Study guides were given out last week. The study guide will be due on Wednesday and will count as a homework grade. Our next unit will be multiplying by 1digit numbers. Please check out the "practice your multiplication facts" tab on my website. This is a great resource for students to use to help them practice their basic facts while also tracking their progress! We will be using it in class as well. Students will be given timed multiplication tests throughout our unit so this is a great way to prepare at home.

I am so excited to start our first unit this week!
Our first unit will be on place value, addition, and subtraction to one million.
This week we will be working on finding a digit's value, reading and writing large numbers, comparing large numbers, and rounding large numbers.
In third grade, students have learned how to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. This year, we will be learning how to round large numbers to any place value (nearest thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, million). We will also be adding and subtracting whole numbers within 1,000,000.
Students were given their gomath workbooks this week and will have homework each night. Students will copy their homework down before the period is over Please use the homework tab to check for homework each night in case your child missed the HW for that day.

Welcome to 4th Grade Math!
My goal as a math teacher is to help my students grow as students of mathematics. I want my students to learn topics visually, conceptually, procedurally and understand why and how it is used in the real world. I hold high expectations for each and every one of my students and I strongly believe that everyone can reach their highest potential!
Homework is posted on the website weekly. Please be sure to check it everyday!!
