Cell Phone Policy
POLICY FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY
The information below, is a reminder of the P.S./I.S. 49 policy on the possession and use of electronic devices including cell phones while on school property. Please take a moment to review this information with your child to ensure that he or she clearly understands this policy and its potential consequences.
While students are permitted to bring electronic devices including cell phones to school, they are strongly discouraged from doing so unless it is absolutely necessary and P.S./I.S. 49 will not be liable for items that are lost or damaged while at school.
These items may not be turned on or used anywhere in the school building without permission from a staff member. At no time should a parent or guardian attempt to contact their child on any electronic device during the school day.
Any student found to have an electronic device turned on in the school building without permission from a staff member will be subject to the following:
- Verbal reprimand.
- Student’s device will be confiscated and parent/guardian must come school to retrieve it.
- Students who are repeatedly found in violation of the above will be subject to the New York City Department of Education’s Citywide Behavioral Expectations also known as the Discipline Code and may have his or her privilege to bring these items to school revoked.
- In addition to the above, students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music systems in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the Discipline Code.
*This policy extends to students enrolled in programs before and after school and on any school sanctioned field trip, sporting event, or after school activity.
**Please note that this is a “zero tolerance policy”. This is necessary to help to ensure a cohesive learning environment as well as the safety and well-being of every member of the school community.
