ENL- Reading Workshop

  • Dear parents and students,

This year we’ve started our reading workshop with a reading unit Reading Stories Through Pictures”.

In this unit we are reading aloud and discussing such well-known children’s favorites as “The Three Little Pigs”, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, The Little Red Hen”, and   “The Gingerbread Man”.

We warm up before reading by looking at the book’s title, at the front and back covers and at the title page (page after front cover).  We learn that all stories have beginning (it is the first part of the story), middle (what happens next in the story), and end (this is where the story comes to a close, it is the conclusion and solution to the problem).

We learn about such story elements as characters, setting, plot and lessons learned. We notice that characters are people and / or animals in the story. We pay attention to setting in our books and how it changes. We notice our characters’ feelings and emotions and how they change throughout a story.   We use pictures to retell the story in order.  We draw our favorite and/ or funny parts of the books and talk about them. We learn new words and use them to talk about stories we read.

    We enjoy reading our stories!
