About Us

At PS/IS 49 we work effortlessly to create an environment that fosters lifelong learning.  We offer our students a liberal arts program infused with technology and cultural arts.  We encourage our students to be both independent thinkers and problem solvers.  Our school program provides a dynamic environment with quality teaching and high standards of rigor and accountability.

We are nestled in Middle Village, Queens across from Juniper Valley Park.  Our school building was originally constructed in 1931. In September 2009 we proudly debuted our new school extension with many important amenities for our students.  The extension made way for our expansion to a Kindergarten through 8th grade school.

Our classes in K-8 are heterogeneously grouped allowing each class to have a range of student abilities. Research has proven that by doing so, students in all ranges excel and strive.  In addition we have created an Intergrated Team Teaching Class per grade and a Special Education Cross Graded Class. These classes are instrumental in supporting the students who struggle academically.  In the middle school grades (6-8) we prepare students for the NYS High School Regents in the subject areas of science and math.

Our literacy program is based on the Teachers College-Columbia University model.  Each of our classrooms contain extensive leveled libraries with a wide genre of literature.  Our literacy units of study are designed to expose our students to all skills necessary to nurture their love of reading.

We are in the process of implementing a constructivist math program.  Our new math program will better prepare our students to use math in real-life situations and applications.

Over the past several years we have developed a conceptual approach to teaching social studies. Through this new approach we are able to provide the students with a deeper and multi-faceted understanding of the workings of communities and countries.

Music and art is the thread that joins our educational quilt.  By incorporating art and music we are able to enhance and support all curriculum areas.

At 49 we all are lifelong learners!!!  Our teachers and school staff meet weekly to discuss ways to be more effective.  Professional development is provided continuously and is carefully aligned to our school goals and objectives. We have many different partnerships which support the students directly.  Currently we are partners with the NY Philharmonic, Studio in A school, Asia Society and  the Schubert Foundation.  We have also partnered with organizations to develop our pedagogy and understanding of effective teaching strategies.  This year we are working with LitLife, a professional developer from Aussie, a Professor from Queens College and VTS.
